2022/23 UEFA Champions League

Quarter-final - Second-Leg

Chelsea FC v Real Madrid

Stamford Bridge
London, England
Tuesday, 18 April 2023
Kick-off is at 21h00

Chelsea FC will battle it out with Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League match at Stamford Bridge on April 18.

Champions League Form

The English giants succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Madrid in the quarter-final first-leg clash in Spain on April 12.

It was the Blues' second defeat in their last three Champions League games, while the other game ended in a win over Germany's Borussia Dortmund.

Chelsea are undefeated in their last four matches at home in this competition having registered three successive victories and one draw.

While Madrid are unbeaten in their last four matches in the Champions League having recorded four consecutive wins.

The Spanish giants defeated England's Liverpool FC in their last game on the road in this tournament and the win ended their two-match winless run as the visitors.

What Is At Stake

Chelsea will be determined to win this match by three clear goals in order to progress to the semi-finals as a victory by a two-goal margin would take this tie into extra time.

Madrid will progress to the last eight if they avoid a defeat at Stamford Bridge and the winner of this tie would then face Germany's Bayern Munich or Manchester City of England in the semi-finals.

Team News

Chelsea striker Armando Broja will be missing having sustained a cruciate ligament rupture, but the club has no suspension worries.

Meanwhile, Ferland Mendy is the only player who is on Madrid's injury list at the moment as the Frenchman nurses a muscle injury and Carlo Ancelotti's side has no suspension concerns.

Key Players

Chelsea will pin their hopes of reaching the semi-finals on world-class attacker Joao Felix who has the ability to single-handedly inspire the Blues to a win over Madrid.

On the other hand, Madrid will look to their influential winger Vinicius Junior who grabbed an assist as they defeated Chelsea in the first-leg encounter.

Quotes

"I think it’s a big challenge, a team with the quality of Real Madrid. The door is open, it’s up to us if we want to kick it open next week or not," Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said after their clash with Chelsea.

"There’s a mixed emotion about the game, we were in the game, we could have done better. We can utilize out strengths better: with the system of wingbacks, we could be more urgent.

"That’s what we have to work on. I could see opportunity there tonight, the spirit at the end of the game was great. A lot of things can happen, and we didn’t give them lots of great chances. I have to be the first one to believe that it’s possible."

Head-to-Head

Chelsea and Madrid have met four times in the Champions League.

The Whites have won two matches compared to the Blues' one win, while the other game ended in a draw.
